“Functional foot orthoses” are devices that fit in your shoe to align the joints of the foot and the joints above it. They look rather like old-fashioned arch supports but are prescribed to align the structure of the foot, not support the arch. They eliminate the knock on effects on other joints arising from poor foot or leg mechanics. Orthoses on occasions, can have additions added to redistribute pressure or soften control but it should be remembered that only rigid devices can withstand the forces at the foot to ground interface and exercise control. Devices that flatten under load allow the foot to deform as normal and as a result have little to no value, similar to an arch support. To assist in recognition, we have named our devices “Orthomeds” to differentiate our product from other devices available on the market.
